Proposed Syke Conservation Area Consultation
Overview
Syke is a historic area of Rochdale, lying to the north east of the town centre. It is on the historic pack horse trail which in the past was essential in linking Rochdale to Clitheroe. The area developed around this historic route and the area still has a number of well-preserved historic buildings and spaces, including farms and weavers cottages. The centrepiece of the area is the picturesque Syke pond and 19th century weavers’ cottages at Polly Green.
Council officers have identified this area as being of special architectural and historic interest, worthy of protection through Conservation Area designation (Planning (Listed Buildings and Conservation Areas) Act 1990).
Living in a conservation area brings with it some restrictions on the types of development which may be carried out and restricts works to trees. For more details, please see the draft conservation area appraisal and Living in a Conservation Area | Historic England
Officers would like to seek the views of residents on the proposals to create a conservation area in Syke. We would also like feedback on the potential extent of the conservation area and the draft conservation area appraisal.
The 28 day consultation period will take place from the 11th November until 9th December.
A public drop in session will take place at Syke Community Hub, Syke Methodist Church, Syke Road, OL12 9TF on 13th November 2024 from 6pm to 8pm.
