Housing Allocation Policy Survey (September 2024)
Overview
This consultation exercise follows on from a previous public consultation earlier this year. The consultation is about finding the best pathway for everyone seeking a home to get somewhere suitable in the shortest period of time. This might not always be through the Council's Housing Register.
There’s nearly 9,000 households on the Council’s Housing Register, yet over 67% (nearly 6,000) of those registered are not in priority need.
Each week, just 10-15 social housing homes become available.
The Council wants to focus its resources on supporting those in housing need and to whom it owes a legal duty to give priority.
It also wants to ensure the few homes that do become available, are allocated to those in the most need; for example those who are homeless, overcrowded, living in temporary accommodation or to those who may need to move due to a health condition being made worse by their current home.
Therefore the Council is consulting on a proposed change to its Housing Register and housing scheme.
